Contacts
Add a contact
You must invite contacts to use BlackBerry® Messenger before they are added to your contact list.
1. In BlackBerry Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Add a Contact.
3. Perform one of the following actions:
• If the contact is not in your address book, highlight Use Once. Press the Menu key. Click Request by Email or Request by PIN. Type an email address or PIN. Press the Enter key.
• If the contact is in your address book, highlight a contact. Press the Menu key. Click Request (Email) or Request (PIN).
4. Perform one of the following actions:
• If you want to set a password, and have turned on invitation passwords, type a question and answer. Click OK.
• If you do not want to set a password, and have turned on invitation passwords, click Cancel to proceed to the next step.
5. Perform one of the following actions:
• To add a custom message to your invitation, type a message. Click OK.
• To use the default invitation message, click OK.
Turn on invitation passwords
If you turn on invitation passwords, a question and password screen appears each time you invite a contact.
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
3. Change the Ask Password Question When Adding Contacts field to Yes.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.
Note: To turn off invitation passwords again, change the Ask Password Question When Adding Contacts field to No.
Respond to an invitation
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, in the Requests group, highlight an invitation.
2. Click the trackball.
3. Click one of the following menu items:
• Accept
• Decline
• Remove
Note: If you click Remove, the contact who sent the invitation does not receive confirmation that your email address is a correct email address.
Turn off invitation forwarding options
If you turn off invitation forwarding, contacts that you invite can only accept invitations from the original email address or PIN that you sent the invitation to. If those contacts try to accept the invitation from a different email address or PIN, their acceptance is rejected.
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
3. Change the Allow Forwarding of Requests field to No.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.
Note: If you use a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for IBM® Lotus® Domino®, BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell® GroupWise®, or the BlackBerry® Internet Service, when you send an invitation and the recipient accepts, you might not be notified.
Delete a contact
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Delete Contact.
View a contact's information
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Contact Info.
Rename a contact
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Rename Contact.
4. Type a name.
5. Click OK.
Add a group
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Add Group.
3. Type a name for the group.
4. Click OK.
Move a contact to a different group
A contact can only be in one group at a time. If you move a contact to a group, the contact is moved out of the group it was in originally.
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Move Contact.
4. Click a group.
Rename a group
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight a group.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Rename Group.
4. Type a name for the group.
5. Click OK.
Delete a group
You must move your contacts out of a group before you can delete that group. There must be at least one group in your BlackBerry
Messenger contact list; you cannot delete the last remaining group in your contact list.
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, highlight a group.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Delete Group.
Conversations
Start a conversation
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight a contact.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Start Conversation.
4. Type a message.
5. Press the Enter key.
Open a conversation
Conversations appear in the conversation list and in the main message list.
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, in the conversation list, highlight a contact.
2. Click the trackball.
Add an emoticon
1. When composing a message, press the Symbol key twice.
2. Click an emoticon.
Send a file to a contact
1. During a BlackBerry Messenger conversation, click the trackball.
2. Click Send a File.
3. Navigate to a folder that contains pictures or audio files.
Ping a contact
When you ping a contact, the contact's BlackBerry® device vibrates.
1. During a BlackBerry Messenger conversation, click the trackball.
2. Click Ping Contact.
Turn off ping vibration
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
3. Change the Vibrate When Receiving a Ping field to No.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.
To turn on ping vibration again, change the Vibrate When Receiving a Ping field to Yes.
Prevent conversations from appearing in the main message list
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
3. Change the Show Conversations in Message List field to No.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Save.
To view conversations in the main message list again, change the Show Conversations in Message List field to Yes.
Start a conference
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
2. Click Invite.
3. In the drop-down list, click a contact.
4. Click OK.
Copy a conversation history
When you copy a conversation history, you can paste it into other BlackBerry® device applications.
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
2. Click Copy History.
Clear a conversation history
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
2. Click Clear History.
End a conversation
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
2. Click End Conversation.
Change your display name
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click Edit My Info.
3. Type a display name.
4. Click OK.
Availability
Change your availability status
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, press the Menu key.
2. Click My Status.
3. Click Available or Unavailable.
4. Type a message that contacts can see when they view your contact information.
5. Click OK.
When you change your availability status to unavailable, you receive BlackBerry Messenger messages, but you are not notified.
Receive notification when a contact becomes available
1. In BlackBerry® Messenger, on the contact list screen, highlight an unavailable contact.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Set Alert.
